What it can cover
Modifications that help someone live safely and independently at home, as recommended by an occupational therapist. Common examples:
- Grab bars and handrails
- Walk-in and curbless showers, and tub cut-outs
- Handheld showers, shower seats, raised toilets and toilet frames
- Ramps, threshold changes and lever handles
- Larger items such as stairlifts and porch lifts (we refer these to trusted specialists)
How the process works
- OT home assessment. An occupational therapist visits and completes the assessment section of the application. We can recommend an OT.
- Quote and application. We provide a written quote for the recommended work. You or your family submit the application with the OT's assessment.
- Approval. BC Housing reviews it, typically in about 8 weeks, and confirms what is covered.
- Installation. We complete the approved work. You have 180 days from approval to finish.
- Reimbursement. You pay for the work and submit proof of completion. The rebate is paid to you, usually about 3 weeks later.
Hospital discharge or urgent need? Waiting 8+ weeks isn't always possible. Many families install the essentials first and use tax credits instead. Call us at (778) 652-2327 and we'll talk through the options.
