Short answer: look for an installer who specializes in senior home safety, anchors bars into studs or rated anchors, works from an occupational therapist's recommendations when there is one, and carries liability insurance. A general handyman can hang a bar; placing it where it will actually stop a fall is a different skill.

What we heard at Glen Pine
In early October we spent a Saturday at Glen Pine Pavilion in Coquitlam, alongside our partners at PathLight Home & Accessibility. The conversation that came up again and again surprised us: seniors told us they had wanted grab bars for months, sometimes years, but simply didn't know who to call.
They knew the tub step was getting harder. They knew the bathroom was where a fall was most likely. What stopped them wasn't cost or pride. It was not knowing whether this was a job for a plumber, a handyman, a medical supply store, or their doctor.
Why it's confusing
- Medical supply stores sell grab bars, but most don't install them.
- Handymen will often install one, but may not know where it should go for someone with balance or mobility changes, or how to anchor it in tile or a fibreglass surround.
- Occupational therapists know exactly where the bars should go, but they assess and recommend; they don't install.
- Large renovation companies may not take a one- or two-bar job at all.
That gap is the reason businesses like ours exist: installers who focus on senior home safety and work alongside OTs.
What to look for in a grab bar installer
- They ask how the person moves. Which side they step in from, whether they use a shower seat, whether they hold the towel bar now. Placement should follow the person, not the studs.
- They explain how each bar is anchored. Into a stud, into blocking, or with an anchor rated for that wall type. Never drywall alone, never suction cups for a weight-bearing bar.
- They follow your OT's recommendations exactly, if an OT has assessed the home.
- They're insured and registered. Ask for liability insurance and WorkSafeBC registration, especially in a strata building.
- They give you something in writing. A written quote before the work, and a record of what was installed afterwards for grants, tax credits or insurance.
